I’m the best putter in the world!

At the end of the year he was ranked 127th on the PGA Tour in putts per round. Obviously this stat wasn’t placing any money into his bank account. He was going to see three different putting gurus. All had great reputations. He was considering the belly, claw and any other technique to help him putt the ball in the cup. Putters? He was open to trying a hockey stick or a broom.

I bet David Peoples that he would be ranked #1 in putts per round on the PGA Tour by April 1st. Not #2, #3 or even top 10….#1. If he was #1 on April 1st I win. Anything less and he wins. He said, “What’s the catch?” I replied there was a catch but it was something he controlled. Here’s the deal:

Within five seconds after every putt attempted in the first three months of the year, David had to say to himself, “I’m the world’s best putter.” He could abbreviate by saying to himself…“#1.” If he fails to say it, he loses the bet. The honor system is in play. That’s all he had to do. No new putter. No putting guru. No new technique.

With each day of practice and play David’s confidence began to soar. Even when he missed badly from a poor read or a poor roll, his confidence still grew with each affirmation of his skill. Belief turned to expectancy. Expectancy eventually turned to knowing. It was this sense of knowing that found him #1 in putts per round on April 1st on the PGA Tour.

Sometimes you just need to sell you on you!
